Calvary Chapel of Russell

About

Calvary Chapel of Russell began when a Warren, PA native returned home in 1977 after completing seminary training in California. Pastor Jeff York studied under Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa. Pastor Chuck and Jeff had front-row seats for Jesus Revolution. Jeff asked Pastor Chuck if he could go home and plant a Calvary Chapel fellowship in Pennsylvania. With his blessing, Chuck sent Jeff back east where he began a bible study in 1978, which grew into River of Life Church. River of Life met at various locations until 1985 when their current building was constructed. In the early 2000s, to reflect our connection with the movement of God initiated through Pastor Chuck, we adopted the name Calvary Chapel of Russell.

Statement of Faith

Calvary Chapel of Russell is in northwestern Pennsylvania not far from the NY/PA border (see map below). We are affiliated with Calvary Chapel Association (CCA, https://calvarycca.org/). Calvary Chapel was formed as a fellowship of believers under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Our supreme desire is to know Him and be conformed to His image by the power of the Holy Spirit. We seek to glorify God by equipping believers to share the good news of Jesus in our town, our country, and to the ends of the earth.

What We Believe

In light of the above, here are some of our main beliefs.

Regarding God's Nature

Regarding God's Nature

We believe there is one living and true God, the creator of all, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory. God loves the world (you!) so much, he has gone to extraordinary lengths to show us. (Genesis 1:1, Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19-20, John 3:16, Romans 1:18-20, Hebrews 1:3)

Regarding Jesus - The Son

Regarding Jesus - The Son

We believe that Jesus, though fully God, became a man. We believe that He is the promised Messiah, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, provided for the atonement of our sins by His death on the Cross, was bodily resurrected, ascended back to the right hand of God the Father, and His personal, visible return to earth . (I Corinthians 15:3-4)

Regarding the Bible (God's Word)

Regarding the Bible (God's Word)

We believe the Bible to be the inerrant God-breathed Word of God: that the Bible (Old and New Testaments), in the original autographs, is the inspired, infallible Word of God, a complete and final written revelation of God. We look to the Word of God for the basis of all our faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3.15-17)

Regarding Man

Regarding Man

We believe that man was created perfectly in the image of God, but when he sinned, mankind incurred both physical and spiritual death; thus man became eternally separated from God and is incapable of providing redemption for himself. We are all born spiritually dead in our trespasses and sins. Thus, we need to be saved.(Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:1)

Regarding Sin and Salvation

Regarding Sin and Salvation

People are separated from God because of sin. By the grace of God, forgiveness and salvation are freely offered to all through faith in Jesus. Each and every person must believe (trust fully) in Jesus and the work He accomplished on the cross on our behalf. (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8-9, 1 John 2:2)

Regarding Authority

Regarding Authority

We believe Jesus Christ is the head of the Body, His church, and that church government should be simple rather than complex and bureaucratic. We desire to be under the authority of the Word of God and led by the Holy Spirit in all the ministry of the church.

Regarding the Holy Spirit

Regarding the Holy Spirit

We believe in the person and work of the Holy Spirit who indwells, seals, and empowers every believer, baptizing them into the Body of Christ. We believe the gifts of the Spirit mentioned in the Scriptures are valid for today, and that they are to be exercised within the scriptural guidelines set forth in God's Word. We also believe that love is more important than all the gifts, and without this love all exercise of spiritual gifts is worthless. (John 14:15, 16)

Regarding Marriage

Regarding Marriage

We believe that God created humans and that He created them male and female. As such, He created them different so as to complement and complete each other. God instituted monogamous marriage between male and female as the foundation of the family and the basic structure of human society. (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6; John 4:16-18; Romans 1:18-32; I Corinthians 5:11, 6:9-11,18-20, 7:1-3,8-9; Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 5:3-7; I Timothy 1:9-11).
